On the meeting with foreign experts on the project "Support for radioactive waste management in Ukraine"

On November 25, 2015,  SSE "Kyiv SISС”, “USС Radon" ( Kyiv) organized the meeting with western experts involved in the project" Support for radioactive waste management in Ukraine ".

Inspection on radioactive waste transportation safety rules compliance

Pursuant to administrative documents of the SEZA, earlier this month SE "Technical and Information Support Management Center of the Exclusion Zone" radiation safety sector inspected the compliance of radiation safety rules during radioactive waste transportation that is performed by SE "Objects Maintenance Management Office".

Inspection revealed some shortcomings, such as: special motor trucks are equipped with defective tents that does not provide tightness and can lead to the scattering or leakage of radioactive materials during transportation and, besides, instruments do not have appropriate labeling. Therefore they have one month to eliminate the shortcomings.

Following the inspection analytical and reporting materials have been prepared.

SSRI “Chernobyl Center”  prepares new editions of scientific and technical collection entitled "Problems of Chernobyl exclusion zone"  in order to inform the wider community of scientists and the public on the results of research and development works aimed to develop solutions for overcoming the  consequences of the Chernobyl disaster and radioactive waste management, performed by enterprises and institutions of the State Exclusion Zone Agency, according to the order №69 «About publication of the collection" issued May 29, 2013  and order №59 «About preparation of the scientific and technical collection" issued June 19, 2015.

The use of modern domestic equipment by the Central Analytical Laboratory

In the frames of cooperation on nuclear safety of European Union with the Ukrainian partner, the State Exclusion Zone Agency, successfully implemented a project to improve the infrastructure for radioactive waste management in the exclusion zone. Central Analytical Laboratory (CAL) class II characterization of radioactive waste (RW) is in the center of measuring radiation environmental monitoring and radiation dosimetry control "Ecocenter" SSE "Chernobyl Specialized”. The project with the total cost is 6 million euros was made in two and a half years with Lithuanian contractor UAB «Lokmis».

November 13, 2015 Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine held a round table: "Exclusion zone: Present and Future". The event was organized by State Exclusion Zone Agency.

Objective:

Analysis of state governance in the exclusion zone.

Discussion:

1. Public safety - the main purpose of the state activities in the exclusion zone.
2. Sufficiency of material, institutional and human resources to achieve safety purpose.
3. The exclusion zone as an opportunity for effective investment.
