Radioactive materials survey in the exclusion zone to be continued

Director General of the State Scientific-Research Institution "Chornobyl Centre for Nuclear Safety, Radioactive Waste and Radioecology" (SSRI "Chornobyl Centre") M. Bondarkov and A. Maksimenko (the head of logistics research services from the International Radiological Laboratory) attended the technical meeting on implementation of the 3rd phase of the project on "Survey of radioactive materials decaying in the Chernobyl exclusion zone (additional work)."

The meeting was held from 7 to 10 February, 2016 in the city of Warsaw, Poland. The participants summarized the results of work completed in accordance with the third stage of the project and discussed the possibilities of further studies in the Chernobyl exclusion zone.

All work is performed according to the "Framework Agreement on Cooperative Threat Reduction for Ukraine" between the USA and Ukraine from October 25, 1993 concerning the promotion on the destruction of strategic nuclear weapons in Ukraine and preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, and the development of the state system protection, control and accounting materials for the protection of nuclear materials used for peaceful purposes in Ukraine.

Customer is Battelle Energy Alliance, LLC, which is the general contractor of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE).

Beneficiary is the State Exclusion Zone Agency (SEZA).


A round table meeting on “The status and prospects of researches and developments in the exclusion zone” was held

A round table meeting on “The status and prospects of researches and developments in the exclusion zone” was held at the Ministry of Ecology and Natural resources of Ukraine on January 29, 2016.

The event was organized by State Agency of Ukraine on the Exclusion Zone Management.

Among the participants, in addition to scientists, were Representatives of the Presidential Administration of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources of Ukraine, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, Ministry of Education and Science, other institutions and organizations.

About participation of SSRI "Chornobyl Center" management in the technical meeting in the city of Brussels, Belgium

Director General of SSRI "Chornobyl Center" Bondarkov M.D. and Head of Logistics Research Center of International Radioecology Laboratory Maksimenko A.M. participate in the technical meeting from January 18 to 21, 2016 on the project for the assistance in the equipment of a radiochemical laboratory and establishment of a mobile radiochemical laboratory on the Al-Tuwaitha site in Iraq (project is implemented in collaboration with the Lithuanian company LOKMIS and funded by the European Commission).

Contract on creation of a facility for release of materials from regulatory control at ChNPP is concluded

This Contract is financed by the EC within INSC (Instrument for Nuclear Safety Cooperation) programme. According to the Contract, the equipment required for installation of the release facility will be designed, manufactured and delivered to the ChNPP industrial site. The Contract covers assembling of the equipment, acceptance tests, certification and licensing, after which the equipment will be commissioned, as well as training of ChNPP personnel who will operate the facility.

Working visit of representatives of the Republic of Iraq Ministry of Science and Technology and experts of Lithuanian company «LOKMIS» to the exclusion zone.

In the framework of the international project "Improvement of infrastructure for radioactive waste management in the Chernobyl exclusion zone. Phase II" Lithuanian company« LOKMIS », as a contractor, on July 1, 2015, delivered the equipment to the Central Analytical Laboratory (CAL) class II on characterization of radioactive waste (RAW), which is part of the centre of measuring radiation- ecological and radiation-spectrometric monitoring "Ecocentre" of SSE "Chornobyl Specialized" and transferred mobile laboratory complex (MLC) to SSE "Central Enterprise for the Management of Radioactive Waste " (SSE " CEMRW").

URTC work

In 2016 URTC plans to hold training courses both for radiologists and specialists in the field of radioactive waste management. Curricula and training programs on yearly basis are being developed, schedules of training courses, work to identify the needs of Interregional Specialized Complexes and other enterprises Ukrainian State Corporation "Radon" to improve skills of management staff, engineering technicians and category "A" staff. The need of training radiologists in the field of radiation monitoring network was determined.

On January 11, 2016 four units of machinery were dispatched for clearing roads from snow and to sand pavement in the exclusion zone, namely: two combined road trucks and two tractors.

Media representatives visited Chernobyl exclusion zone

The mass media representatives also visited the production complex "Vektor", which was established because of necessity to minimize environmental hazard on the territories of radioactive contamination as a result of the Chernobyl accident.

Flowers were laid to the memorials on the Day of remembrance of liquidators of Chernobyl disaster in Chernobyl town

According to the Decree of the President of Ukraine "On the Day of remembrance of liquidators of Chernobyl disaster" from December 10, 2006 Solemn Day of liquidators of Chernobyl disaster is marked on annual basis on December 14.

On December 14, 2015 in Chernobyl town "On the Day of remembrance of liquidators of Chernobyl disaster" flowers were laid to the memorial "Those who saved the world", memorial sign established for the 25-th Commemoration anniversary of Chernobyl disaster (memorial complex "Wormwood star") and memorial to liquidators of Chernobyl disaster at World war 2 Glory park.

On aerial geophysical surveys

Works on the aerial geophysical surveys at the area of temporary RAW localisation sites (TRWLS) in the Chernobyl exclusion zone are carried out within the framework of the project "Support of radioactive waste management in Ukraine" (sub-project "Survey of sites for localisation and temporary storage of radioactive waste in the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone") according to the contract between PLEJADES GmbH and SRG "Pulsar" SI "IEG NASU AND ME"  (Institute for environmental geochemistry of NASU and ME ) from 26 March 2015.

State Specialized Enterprise "Central Enterprise for the Management of Radioactive Waste" continues disposal of radioactive waste

State Specialized Enterprise "Central Enterprise for the Management of Radioactive Waste" (SSE "CEMRW") continues work on disposal of radioactive waste at a specially equipped surface repository of solid radioactive waste “PC Vektor” (productions complex for decontamination, transportation, processing and disposal of radioactive waste).

Another batch of radioactive waste was delivered to disposal site from SSE "Kharkiv SISC" USС Radon on December 02, 2015. All works were performed in accordance with the approved technological regulations.
