To the 33rd anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster the Prime Minister of Ukraine was reported on the results of the pilot operation of the NSC and the construction completion of the 1st queue of the Vector complex

Within the framework of the official visit of the Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman to the Exclusion zone on the occasion of the 33rd anniversary of the Chornobyl disaster there was a commemoration of liquidators and working meetings. The events took place with the participation of the Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Ostap Semerak, Head of SAUEZM Vitalii Petruk, President of SE «Energoatom»Yuri Nedashkovsky, Head of the SNRCU Gregory Plachkov, Head of the Kyiv Regional State Administration Oleksandr Tereshchuk, Slavutych Mayor Yuriy Fomichev and the management of the Exclusion zone.

In particular, Volodymyr Groysman visited the Chornobyl NPP, where he became acquainted with the state of implementation of the main tasks for the New Safe Confinement commissioning, decommissioning of the Chornobyl plant and transformation of the Shelter object into an environmentally safe system. Also, the Prime Minister visited the Centralized storage facility for spent fuel and the Vector complex, where the vast majority of Ukraine's radioactive waste management infrastructure (RW) is focused.

«The main task of the authorities is to ensure purity of the environment. Our Government has completed the Shelter project, we have restored the whole range of measures in order to ensure the safety of people's lives and health. Now the situation is completely stable. We, together with international partners, are implementing the latest technologies and solutions to overcome the consequences of the Chornobyl disaster», the Head of the Government said. He stressed that the implementation of all security measures will continue in the future.

The day before the anniversary of the Chornobyl catastrophe on the main security facility of the Exclusion zone - New safe confinement - successfully completed a 72-hours trial operation, which was aimed at verifying the functioning of all systems. Today we can talk about the readiness of the facility before the transition to pilot operation after receiving all the necessary permits. Such operation will last no more than 1 year, after which the ChNPP will be licensed and will proceed to NSC operation and dismantling of unstable structures of the Shelter Object.

In addition, the construction of the 1st queue of the Vector complex has been recently completed, which became possible for the first time since Ukraine’s independence due to the restoration of the targeted use of the funds from the State Fund for radioactive waste management, as well as a repository design for vitrified radioactive waste to be returned from the Russian Federation is being prepared. Among the important results were also presented the results of reconstruction and renovation of more than 10 infrastructure facilities of the Vector complex, which ensure the functioning of the radioactive waste management system.

NSC in the trial operation mode On April 22 the New Safe Confinement was transferred to trial operation mode.

During the trial operation practically all NSC equipment and systems will be operated in the design mode within 72 hours. The goal of the trial operation is to make sure that all equipment and devices are operated in the design mode and perform their functions. In addition, such operation will allow checking the level of ChNPP's personnel qualification gained during the training. The test subject during the trial operation is the conditional dismantling of Shelter Object unstable structures. The first stage of the trial operation was devoted to the testing of the main cranes system (hereinafter: MCS): movement of carriages from bridge cranes to maintenance garages (northern and southern garages). During the second testing day the MCS crane run-way beams were inspected and movement of two cranes (western and eastern) over the Shelter Object roof was tested. After that dismantling, lifting and movement to the temporary storage site of a metal truss, established during the Shelter Object stabilization measures, was simulated. At the final stage of trial operation, activities on handling the conditionally delivered truss will be executed at the temporary storage site: its fragmentation, decontamination, loading into a container, characterization of solid radioactive waste (hereinafter: SRW), the container loading into the container carrier and its transfer to the Industrial Complex for Solid RAW Management. After the trial operation, the project will pass to the pilot operation stage. For this the Chornobyl NPP should obtain a corresponding permit based on the documents compiled on the basis of the trial operation results. The pilot operation will continue not longer than 1 year. After that the Chornobyl NPP will obtain a license and will start the NSC operation and dismantling of the Shelter Object unstable structures.
