President of Ukraine signed a decree on the development of the Exclusion Zone and participated in the transfer of the New Safe Confinement (NSC) from the contractor organization «NOVARKA» to «Chornobyl NPP»

During the events in Chornobyl on the occasion of the successful completion of the largest project of international cooperation in the field of nuclear safety, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky handed the State Hero of Ukraine Award to three liquidators of the Chornobyl nuclear power station accident: Oleksiy Ananenko – Senior mechanical engineer of the reactor shop of the SSE Chornobyl NPP 1983 – 1989 years, Valery Bespalov – senior engineer of the turbine shop of the nuclear power plant in 1986 and posthumously to Borys Baranov – Chief of the shift in 1976-2005, the reward was given to his son Oleksandr.

Also, the Head of State signed a Decree on the development of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone and its priority areas. The document envisages the development and adoption of the Strategy for the development of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone as a tourist facility and a development area for scientific research.

In particular, according to the Decree, in the exclusion zone new tourist routes and new check points will be built, and existing ones will be restored and upgraded.

«Chornobyl is a unique place on the planet, where nature revives after a world-wide man‑made disaster, where exists a real «ghost town». We have to show this place to the world: to scientists, ecologists, historians, tourists», – said Volodymyr Zelensky.

He also thanked for the efforts of dozens of countries in the world who united to create a facility to protect the planet and humanity from a world-wide problem that has no borders – radiation pollution.

«Thanks to strong international support and international cooperation, which today is the largest project of international cooperation in the field of nuclear safety, today we have a unique Object, which will be put into operation this year and not less unique experience for future work. Ahead is the transformation of the Shelter Object into an environmentally safe system, the implementation of international obligations for the dismantling of unstable structures, the introduction of ISF-2 and the construction of a storage facility for the interim storage of vitrified radioactive waste that will be returned from the Russian Federation», – during his report, the Head of State agency of Ukraine on Exclusion Zone Management Vitalii Petruk noted.

In addition, the Head of SAUEZM reported to the President about the concept of the development of the exclusion zone, which contains a conditionally 30-kilometer zone, which today develops as a protected area and the most polluted area around the ChNPP – the territory of special industrial use for the development of radioactive waste management infrastructure.

«We consider it’s our duty to show what the price of a human error can bring, and which really fragile is our world. And at the same time, people should see how nature can be reborn. The agency will do its utmost to ensure that the visit is safe and observes all rules of stay in the exclusion zone and radiation safety rules», – the head of SAUEZM informed.

The event included a symbolic acceptance of the NSC from «NOVARKA» to SSE «Chornobyl NPP».

During his trip to Chornobyl, the President of Ukraine visited the space under the NSC (Arch), the NSC Control Center, visited the construction site of the centralized spent fuel storage facility and the Vector complex and put flowers on the monument to the Heroes of Chornobyl.
