Ukrainian and British experts shared their experience in managing radioactive waste

Representatives of SAUEZM and Ukrainian enterprises on radioactive waste management discussed with the British Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) and a number of profile associations and commercial companies approaches to waste management and potential areas of cooperation for organizations. They paid great attention to the enhancement of international cooperation between Ukraine and the United Kingdom in the field of nuclear and radiation safety, radioactive waste safety and the provision of expert and advisory assistance from the United Kingdom on the improvement of national technologies.

According to the Head of the Department for International Cooperation and Public Relations of the SAUEZM, Kateryna Pavlova, Ukraine has unique experience in overcoming the largest nuclear power plant accident in the world and managing waste at disposal, and Britain has advanced technologies for managing RAW and NPP decommissioning. «Studying the British experience and developing bilateral cooperation between our countries will improve the Ukrainian system on radioactive waste management», she noted.

During the meeting, the Ukrainian side informed the British guests about the state of overcoming the ecological consequences of the Chornobyl disaster, as well as presented the national concept of preparation and transfer of radioactive waste for storage and disposal.

In their turn, representatives of the British companies Magnox Ltd and Nuvia briefed representatives of the SAUEZM on the operation of the Harwell medium waste site, which is currently underway for decommissioning and decontamination of the contaminated land. The site territory must be adjusted to a condition suitable for subsequent planned use without restrictions on the radiation factor. These works are being carried out in stages and the vast majority of the site should be released from radioactive materials by the end of 2020. The experience of such works is interesting and useful for Ukraine.
