With the support of the European Commission INSC projects are implemented in Ukraine
The Joint Support Office (JSO) hosted the 22nd meeting of the RAW Sector Working Group, where the running status of projects implemented under the INSC (Instrument for Nuclear Safety Cooperation) programme was discussed.
The meeting was chaired by JSO Director David Corbett. Representatives of the DEVCO Directorate of the European Commission, the Secretariat of the CMU, the Ministry of Energy of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Science and Technology Center, the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine, SE «NNEGC «Energoatom», SSE «Association «Radon», SSE «CERWM», SSE «Chornobyl NPP» and SSE «Ecocenter» also joined the online meeting.
Sergii Kalashnyk, Head of SAUEZM, thanked the European Commission for supporting Ukraine in improving the safety and efficiency of management of all types of radioactive waste.
In order to complete the creation and ensure the effective functioning in Ukraine of the integrated system of radioactive waste management and conditions for safe radioactive waste management and sustainable financing in this area, the SAUEZM has developed the Concept of the National Targeted Environmental Program for Radioactive Waste Management. At the current time the draft Concept was sent for approval to the interested central executive bodies.
Also, representatives of the SAUEZM informed the participants of the meeting about the introduction of a new classification of RAW. Radioactive waste will be divided into classes according to their activity and acceptance criteria for disposal in 4 types of storage facilities: on surface, near-surface, at intermediate depths and in deep geological formations. At the same time, the safety of the population and the environment will be ensured at the appropriate level, in accordance with international requirements for disposal of such waste.
During the meeting, the implementation status of the project on the development of a national plan for geological disposal of radioactive waste in Ukraine and the schedule of its implementation, in particular the development of a roadmap and a plan for consultations with the public, which will be involved at all stages of the repository creation.
In addition, with the support of the European Commission, a project on comprehensive assessment of the safety of radioactive waste management sites operated by the SSE «Association «Radon» is being implemented.
It is planned that in the near future a project aimed at modernizing the dosimetry control system in the exclusion zone and monitoring the radiation situation at the Production Complex «Vector» and RWDP «Buryakivka» will be launched.
